Create your own supergroup...
With so many proggers doing one-off projects, side gigs and spin offs, I thought it would be fun to have Moonies create their own supergroups. So many times we've all been dazzled by a particular artist and most probably wondered what this person would be like in another context...
Well here's your chance! The ground rules are simple. The "supergroup" can have no fewer than three members and no more than eight. Members must all be alive and are either active or semi-active. Not all members must be considered as proggers, but more than half must be. If you can describe what the band sounds like and give a band name that would be very cool too. I hope this is something that is not a repeat of an earlier thread. If it is, then think of it as just another side project... And please... don't limit yourself to just one "supergroup." Exercise those immaginations and let's have some fun! Good luck!

Re: Create your own supergroup...
Ok here goes.
First we need a solid rhythm section. I'm hiring Mike Portnoy on drums. He is a monster! He is in Dream Theater, OSI, Transatlantic & Liquid Tension Experiment. Zoinks!... nothing else needs to be said. Let's have Tony Levin on Bass and Stick. Tony can pull a varitey of styles from his extensive experiences. There are too many to mention here. Go to his web page for the list and prepare to be amazed! http://www.tonylevin.com/tldiscog.htm I think we need a Keyboard player next. I am going to ask Jordan Rudess to play. Jordan can play in many styles and seems to be quite a versatile player. I like his recent ventures in to the world of Modular Moog and the combination with the Continuum is amazing. On one recent album I swear he was channeling Rick Wakeman from 20 years ago. We are going to hire a couple Guitar players. It is a "SuperGroup" which means we have great financial backing from the grey-suited-weasels in 'the front office'. First, Steve Howe . The 'professor' has such a style he on both acoustic and electric that he is in. I like the way he seems to 'noodle away' in the background as the song is going along that it is like an unstated melody. Second, I want someone like Joe Satriani . No, I take that back... not someone like Joe Satriani.... I want Joe Satriani! I want a guitarist that will get the whole band ripping and jamming... Just rip a hole in the time-space continuum and blast right through. Now a singer... do we have to have one? I wasn't really planning on having words... Hmmmm Ok, Jon Anderson We'll let him get all... "total mass as the river flows to the center of cosmic feeling of love and life as only you can know inside and outside the inner space." ... This band is going to sound like "Surfing with the Metal ripping funk fingered Floyd to the center of the Earth of Love" Name of the Band: Sapolehoruan (which is Japanese for House of Intense Heavy Insane Music)** ** Ok, it is not. It is the hot and spicy sauce you use when dipping fillets of Deep Sea Frill Shark. Last edited by PeterG : 01-25-2007 at 10:19 AM. |

Re: Create your own supergroup...
I'd go with:
Jon Anderson - Vocals (There's no better prog singer) Steve Hackett - Guitar ('nuff said) Bill Bruford - Drums (Skinsman supreme and his electronic drum kit could add different textures and colours to the sound) Tony Levin - Bass and stick (Again a different sound where possible) Tom Brislin and Guy LeBlanc - Twin Keyboards (Twin keys for an amazing sound) The band could be called Genecamelyesis for obvious reasons ![]() |

Re: Create your own supergroup...
Keith - Didn't we do this once before? There should be a thread somewhere not too long ago.
As for me, I never found many supergroups to be more than the sum of their parts. For some reason, there needs to be a more dominant vision and a singularity of purpose. "Platypus" comes to mind - Tabor, Morgenstein, Sherinian, Myung. Most songs are Ty Tabor related, just happens to have great musicians attached. Transatlantic is not as appealing to me as they should have - I have their CD's and the're excellent. And don't get me started on Asia.... ![]() But fire away, I like reading the combinations..... |

Re: Create your own supergroup...
I would certainly like to see all the above!
My attempt would be utilising all my favourite sounds, both old and new: Group Name: Morlocs Revenge (An Eloy based concept Album) Album Title: Return to the Dark Side Engineer/Producer: Frank Bornemann (Excellent work since his departure from Eloy) Vocals/Keyboards: Michael Sadler (Now available since leaving Saga this year) Guitar/Vocals: Frank Bornemann (Could come out of his music company studio again) Bass/Harmonies: Geddy Lee (Just love his energetic bass play) Drums: Jurgan Rosenthal (Eloy's underated asset also played with Uli Jon Roth and MSG) Keyboards/Clarinet/Vocals: Jim Gilmour (Saga's master of the Keys and the best clarinet harmonies I have heard) Electric Violin: James Sudokow (Only just heard this guy here on the moon and was totally impressed by his style. Up till then was a total Eddie Jobson freak for the violin) Flute: Ian Anderson (Say no more!) The only snag here will be to get over the personal egos and get them to work with each other, but would love to see them work in harmoney. All of the stars would have the writing ability to produce something awsome and diverse. What a live show it would be!
