The Fusion Reactor #72 - Out There

In case you thought I was going mainstream from last week's show, this show is kind of a mixture of experimental fusion tracks interspersed with some more straightforward prog. It doesn't exactly follow that formula, but you'll figure it out as we go along. You're smart listeners.

Let me point out that - to my ears anyhow - this is not a second installment of the Uneasy Listening show. While there is sure to be a bit of dissonance, I was going for more of a different sound for this one. I'm not sure how to describe it exactly, just listen and you'll get it.

Passport - Ready For Take Off
Are you ready? Here's the start to our journey for the evening. It's more of a funky outing than a spacey or really "out there" thing, but you gotta love that Passport sound. It's a good starter.

Sonic Pulsar - Schizophrenic Playground
Dave the Music Guru introduced me to these guys, and I must say I was impressed! This is very cool, if a bit odd. The title fits the sound pretty well once you get into it.

Return To Forever - Duel of the Jester and the Tyrant
The title here doesn't fit with the theme, but to me the song fits perfectly what I was trying to get at. From the spacey intro to the odd sounds and rhythms... This is what I was looking for. Al's solo at the beginning in particular stretches a bit.

Don Caballero - Rollerblade Success Story
Now this one is out there. Time signatures, melodies (if that's what you want to call them), rhythms, sounds... But it's great stuff.

Miles Davis - Medley: Gemini/Double Image
From the heart of his fusion-era stuff. Miles played/composed/conducted some pretty whacked-out stuff.

King Crimson - Virtuous Circle
This later got transformed a bit for their To Power To Believe CD, and while I like the result, I like this a lot too. It's so moody.

Surrender To The Air - Intro > And Furthermore > We Deflate > And Furthermore > Down
For free-jazz, this is pretty cohesive stuff.

John Coltrane and Don Cherry - The Blessing
Don Cherry was one of the fathers of "out there" music, and John Coltrane did some great stuff in that department in the latter part of his career. Together... the results are interesting and pleasurable.

Uz Jsme Doma - Tangrest
They did most of this album both English and in Czech. This is the Czech version. I think it flows a bit better. It's slightly odd, but it's still quite tasty.

Tony Williams Lifetime - Emergency
Tony was always fearlessly pushing boundaries and the title track from his Emergency album is no exception.

Visual Cliff - Let it Ring
A little bit of an anchor here to get you back on the ground. You've got to return to the rational world eventually, right? Good tune with Shane Lankford of Orphan Project on vocals.

KBB - I am not here.
It starts off deceptively sane but soon goes off the deep end. What fun is sanity anyhow?
