Re: Basic Question

This is a tricky one for me because it seems I got into it from various sources. My dad had a copy of THE YES ALBUM (but not much else that could be considered prog)and I remember playing it and not really getting into it at the age of 12 or 13. This was just before the 90125 album which strangely enough is the album that really got me into Yes. I also had an Asia single but it wasn't until camp at age 14 that I realized that two of the guys from Asia(Howe and Downes)were in Yes just a few years ealier. It was at this camp where two brothers from New England really helped to get me more into Yes since they were pretty big fans and I had only just started to get into them. I was still mostly into classic rock/ radio rock/aor at that time. My cousin however, was a big fan of Genesis and I eventually got more and more into them as well. I remember him saying that if you like the early Genesis check out this band called King Crimson. It wasn't until a few years later that I actually became aware of the term "progressive rock" via an old rock encyclopedia which helped to introduce me to a few others. So by 86/87 I was aware of and into(from different sources) Yes, Genesis, Moody Blues, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush and a little bit of ELP. For me bands like Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Camel etc were just around the corner. I discoverd a catalog called "the laser's edge" through goldmine magazine(which itself I had discoverd through an ad in Rolling Stone magazine). This was my introduction to the prog underground and foreign sounding groups(at the time) such as Grobschnitt and Premiata Forneria Marconi who are now old hat to me.

Re: Basic Question

In addition, moonbuddy of two people wrote the comment. We wish to express our gratitude. Thank you. I understand this comment very much. Other people also put out the name of ELP and GENESIS. And, the name of BEATLES, ROLLING STONES, and LED ZEPPELIN was put out.

I wrote that I had experienced KING CRIMSON for the first time first. And, they all felt PROG ROCK. However, it was noticed that the idea was a misunderstanding. It is in addition because wonderful PROG ROCK was able to be discovered. I think that other people are also perhaps the same as it.

A lot of Japanese in his teens hardly know BEATLES now. And, year when I was born is 1970. It is year when BEATLES announced "LET IT BE". However, I know BEATLES.
And, it listens to various music now.

Re: Basic Question

Hi, Kaz san...

Exactly, we got to know about The Beatles first...after John Lennon had been murdered...I'm afraid that now in Japan, young persons may not know them.

We OLD persons should let ourselves "the real rock guide" for young.

Re: Basic Question

Thank you for the comment. damo san。I agree to your opinion. After it participated in AM, I met the person, learnt music, and heard the opinion a lot.

Hereafter, we Japanese also will tell wonderful of music to other people. And, AM will be supported from Japan further.

Re: Basic Question

I felt I should come back to this subject and elaborate on my roots a bit more. During the eighties when it seemed that all my Prog friends were becoming Dead heads, I met a fellow by the name of Jeff. Jeff introduced me to the musicians of Deep Purple, Uriah Heep, and Rare Bird. That was about 10 years or more ago, and we have shared a lot of music with each other over those years, and have become fast friends. I look forward to finding new music with him as we explore the new bands of today.

Re: Basic Question

Spewie wrote the second comment. Thank you spewie.

You had put out the name of HARD ROCK BAND before. And, it was said that it reached PROG ROCK. And, the thing that there was a friend of PROG ROCK in your surroundings might have been inevitable for you. I also had the friend who shared PROG ROCK. However, information on PROG ROCK is very limited in Japan where I live. Especially ten years-ago. 。。

I had only the idea by going directly to the shop. However, a lot of PROG ROCK is put on the market with CD now. And, the concert is held. And, I still run after PROG ROCK.
