Dream Theater
Just heard "Space-Dye Vest" and had to tell Jim and Roger how grateful I am for these new additions. I am thoroughly enjoying all of the added DT tracks that I have heard so far.

loved by many...
I don't love the tune, but I like it better than most of their tunes.
I think Trent Reznor could have a ball remixing/reworking this one.

I heard so many people talking wonders about Dream Theater that bought Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York DVD and honestly, tried very hard to like the music, but as I often believed a person can't change his personal tastes o matter how hard he tries.
All I found is that John Myung, Jordan Rudess and John Petrucci are very talented musicians (Especially Myung), also that Mike Portnoy is not one of my favorite drummers and that James La Brie is IMHO a terrible vocalist; but nothing else, ther music says nothing to me. I like some good metal and early prog' metal once in a while, but I believe this guys are way overrated. Iván |

well said Ivan
Dream Theater to me is a band I liked, especially on their first three or four releases. I still own about 6 CD's, and sometimes put them on.
I think the problem I have with this is that to me, they are not a lightning rod for a discussion like this. They are not conterversial, just really technically sound but soulless in their approach. Although I was completely blown away initially by Liquid tension Experiment, I have grown to dislike them. All bombast and no substance. As for the Spaz Genesis comment, I was a bit too young to see the great bands in their prime (my first show was in 1979), but I was always in awe of Genesis. After my boomerang period, where I was sick of them, I have learned that just looking at the music as it is, it is worthy of all the praise heaped upon them. So what I am saying is if they're not you're cup of tea, so be it. But they are in no way shape or form overrated. That's ludicrous. |

I've been a Dream Theater fan for a while; they were one of the primary bands that first got me interested in prog rock. There is a good portion of their music that I rather like, and though some of it I also feel is rather mediocre, there's no reason to scoff at the band.
Prog rock is a very broad genre, and it contains many, many different facets, so it's no wonder that people take to some bands and not others. The thing that has always made me suspicious about the Dream Theater problem that I've noticed on Aural Moon is that they are disliked simply because of the fact that they are Dream Theater. I often hear bands being played on Aural Moon that have a very similar style, but nobody complains about them despite their being Dream Theateresque (they probably do not notice). If people dislike them purely on the basis of their music's merit, then that's fine with me, but I feel that some people are merely socialized not to like them, and that I do not approve of. Also, I wouldn't describe their music as "soulless." Many traditional Dream Theater fans hated this album, but I recommend 6 Degrees of Inner Turbulance...I've listened to almost all of their albums, and this one always seems to stand out in my mind. It's not by any means one of their famous ones, so I wager that few people here have listened to it. Well, that's my recommendation...take it for what it is. ![]() |

Spaz,
there is a lot to discuss here.....more than i have the energy for...KC and Yes have their issues too...but i'm not going to diss them to prove my point. I guess what I should simply say is..you're in the vast minority about Genesis being overrated - maybe you simply don't like them. That may be a better description. Lemur, I like you, you are very erudite and measured in your comments. But the "soulless" comment is well documented by fans who critique the music. I've been listening to them from the beginning. I agree (and said) DT is not worthy of this abuse they get, I just find them increasingly stale. It's still better than that drivel KC's putting out since "Thrak" (and I saw them recently too). |
