Re: Basic Question
This is a tricky one for me because it seems I got into it from various sources. My dad had a copy of THE YES ALBUM (but not much else that could be considered prog)and I remember playing it and not really getting into it at the age of 12 or 13. This was just before the 90125 album which strangely enough is the album that really got me into Yes. I also had an Asia single but it wasn't until camp at age 14 that I realized that two of the guys from Asia(Howe and Downes)were in Yes just a few years ealier. It was at this camp where two brothers from New England really helped to get me more into Yes since they were pretty big fans and I had only just started to get into them. I was still mostly into classic rock/ radio rock/aor at that time. My cousin however, was a big fan of Genesis and I eventually got more and more into them as well. I remember him saying that if you like the early Genesis check out this band called King Crimson. It wasn't until a few years later that I actually became aware of the term "progressive rock" via an old rock encyclopedia which helped to introduce me to a few others. So by 86/87 I was aware of and into(from different sources) Yes, Genesis, Moody Blues, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Rush and a little bit of ELP. For me bands like Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Camel etc were just around the corner. I discoverd a catalog called "the laser's edge" through goldmine magazine(which itself I had discoverd through an ad in Rolling Stone magazine). This was my introduction to the prog underground and foreign sounding groups(at the time) such as Grobschnitt and Premiata Forneria Marconi who are now old hat to me.
